SAS Audio Consoles

Broadcom are exclusive UK and Ireland distributors for SAS Sierra Automated Systems both supplying and supporting their range of professional digital mixer/routers, audio mixers and talkback systems. This range of products is suitable for radio broadcasting, radio and telvision production, networked audio or venue audio systems.

Connected Digital Network

SAS products are based around a robust flexible mixing matrix that can interconnect to Rubicon mixer control surfaces, digital storage, IFBs, talkback stations and other matrices. They are ideal for integrated mixing, transmission and monitoring applications. Systems are flexible and scaleable. You can build a standalone digital mixing desk or roll out a multi-layered scheme incorporating mixing, routing and talkback all in one system. Matrices can be small (16 x 16) or expanded into much, much larger entities. The key design objective in an SAS system is the simplicity of inter-area, network-based connectivity, essential in today’s ever changing media environment.

32 kD Audio Matrices

At the heart of an SAS routing system is the 32KD network hub, which can be configured as a router for programme and talkback and as a switcher for the RIOLink units that interface mixing desks. Internally, all digital audio is based on TDM technology, which minimises any adverse effects caused by multiple sample-rate converters. The design embodies "distributed liability", where the system is organised so as to provide multiple layers of redundancy. Component failures affect only a small section of the system, and even that is protected. Redundant power supplies, communications and control interfaces are employed throughout the SAS architecture.

Rubicon Mixer Control Surfaces

Using the RIOLink unit, programme audio enters the system through high performance A/D interfaces or AES/EBU adapters. Outputs have their own independent DSPs: this approach negates the need to have common DSP 'farms' common in other radio mixers and which present a serious point of weakness. Indeed robustness and reliability are the foremost criteria in the design of all SAS equipment.

For radio and audio production studios, we offer two console control systems plus a versatile desktop turret design for smaller audio mixing, monitoring and control applications. The Rubicon is intended for larger installations or where programming demands a comprehensive set of facilities on the operating desk. As such there are a wide range of modules available and large frame sizes. The Rubicon SL on the other hand, is a smaller control surface intended for more basic work-a-day applications. That said, the modules available for the Rubicon SL are very adaptable. The Turret mounted unit is ideal for applications needing basic mixing, monitoring or switching functionality but where a small work area footprint is available. These are ideal for newsrooms, production offices or booths.

With the Rubicon, or the Rubicon SL control surfaces, very high quality components are used throughout, making them ideal for the toughest of operators. Solid but soft-action switches are used throughout with LED-cluster back lighting, or programmable text labelling. And with world-renowned P & G faders fitted as standard, professionals will appreciate the quality of the Rubicon control surfaces - designed for durability, long life and ultra-low maintenance. Even with the power of a digital audio environment at the operator's fingertips, SAS has maintained a classic familiar look and feel that makes the console very easy and comfortable to operate.
